emagine's Sustainability Journey

At emagine, we are committed to integrating environmental, social, and governance principles into our business operation and corporate culture. We spoke to our ESG Specialist, Sofie Ulendorf Engstrøm, to discuss emagine’s journey so far.

Copenhagen, October 2024

We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure our people thrive and that we are playing our part in protecting the planet. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it is imperative for any organisation wishing to engage with the increasingly conscious customers and to retain the best employees, who rightfully expect more from their employer.

Among our sustainability initiatives, we have worked with EcoVadis, a globally recognised assessment platform that rates businesses' sustainability based on four key categories: environmental impact, labour, and human rights standards, ethics, and procurement practices.

When did the strategy to become more sustainable begin?

We became a member of the United Nations Global Compact back in 2014, but the focus increased significantly when we carried out our first ESG reporting in 2020.

In 2021, we established sustainability-linked loans with our banks, where we committed to KPIs on attrition and female leaders, and in 2022 we joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to align our emissions targets with The Paris Agreement, a goal to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions to steady the global average temperature.

Her role encompasses driving emission reduction initiatives and leading social campaigns, including those centered on diversity, equity, inclusion, and mental health.

The next step

In the assessment process, EcoVadis provided valuable feedback on where improvements can be made as part of a development plan. This feedback was invaluable when we created our roadmap to achieving EcoVadis Gold. We started making changes early in the process and created a checklist of improvements that helped us to prioritise our initiatives.

Initially, employee training policies were rolled out throughout the business to reinforce our position as a trusted employer. Creating internal awareness of our goals was a key step in achieving this. We launched a Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) campaign which involved employee training and allowed us to introduce ESG topics and goals to the workforce.

We prioritised learning more about the suppliers we worked with, so we conducted supplier assessments and risk assessments.

Next, we focused on the supply chain.

To learn more about the suppliers we worked with, we conducted supplier assessments and risk assessments. This is not a straightforward task in a global company with offices worldwide, but we prioritised it. The team also developed a sustainable procurement policy to increase awareness of purchasing eco-friendly products, which intensified the focus on our suppliers.

By concentrating on all these initiatives, among others, we managed to surpass Gold and achieve the Platinum medal, scoring amongst the top 1% of more than 130,000 businesses assessed globally.

Advantages of more sustainable business

emagine’s ESG values have significantly contributed to winning new clients, and being awarded EcoVadis Platinum has added an extra layer of accountability and validation. Recently, a key differentiator for winning a client project was emagine’s dedication to sustainability. The client trusted emagine over other competitors as we shared the same values, which was important to their organisation.

We are seeing an increased focus on ESG and ethical business conduct across the board. Not only are we seeing this from our clients, but it is clear in questionnaires that we receive from prospective customers, and a growing requirement in tender processes. This is enhanced by the focus on ESG disclosure requirements in the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive legislation which will only grow with pressures from authorities and companies.

emagine is working hard to do the right thing and understand the market and what it expects of us moving forwards. The sustainability journey for any business does not end and there will always be areas to work on and improve, but we are proud to have made great strides to be ahead of market competition.
